2014 Merle Sande Memorial Lecture
This lectureship was established to honor Dr. Merle A. Sande, former chief of medicine at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) and vice-chair of the Department of Medicine at UCSF. During his 15-year tenure at SFGH, Dr. Sande created a humane and cost-effective treatment program, including the first in-patient unit in the world dedicated to the care of patients with AIDS.

The IDI also provides training in infectious diseases for African students and healthcare workers. As the IDI helps build up Africa’s research capacity, it is conducting several ongoing research projects that focus on HIV and related infectious diseases.
